Autore: Animale mostruoso della mitologia greca, il cui nome significa “serpente d’acqua”. Era figlio di Echidna, dimorava nelle paludi di Lerna (antica città della Grecia) che costituivano l’ingresso del regno della morte.
Il suo alito uccideva gli uomini ed essa devastava il paese facendo razzia del bestiame. Possedeva cento teste, di cui una immortale: fino a che quella testa non fosse stata tagliata, le altre, pur mozzate, sarebbero ricresciute immediatamente.
Tuttavia Ercole riuscì ad uccidere l’Idra. Dopo aver obbligato l’Idra ad uscire dalla sua tana sotterranea la decapitò più volte con una spada Con l’aiuto di Iolao, suo nipote, che bruciava con un tizzone le ferite dell’Idra, impedendo alle teste di ricrescere, Ercole riuscì a tagliare la testa immortale del mostro e la seppellì sulla strada di Eleunte dopo aver intinto le proprie frecce nel veleno che ne sgorgava.
