Autore: Il dominio Eukarya comprende organismi, mono- o pluricellulari, costituiti da cellule eucariote la cui caratteristica principale è la presenza di un nucleo ,costituito da una doppia membrana, nel quale è racchiuso il materiale genetico, il DNA .
Queste cellule presentano una dimensione maggiore (solitamente il loro asse maggiore è compreso fra i 10 e i 50 µm) rispetto le cellule procariotiche e sono dotate di un citoplasma compartimentato da membrane interne che delimitano degli organuli specializzati. Ognuno degli organuli immersi nel citoplasma è deputato a svolgere una particolare funzione.
Gli organuli presenti in tutte le cellule eucariote sono un nucleo, i mitocondri, le cisterne e i tubuli del reticolo endoplasmatico, distinto in liscio e rugoso, e dell’apparato di Golgi, vacuoli (vescicole temporanee tra cui i lisosomi). Sono presenti aggregati complessi come i ribosomi, e fibrille proteiche che costituiscono il citoscheletro.

Storicamente i regni rappresentavano la maggiore categoria sistematica della classificazione tassonomica. In questo articolo sarà presa in considerazione la suddivisione in 5 regni secondo Whittaker (1968).
Questo sistema è basato sui seguenti principi :
- Tutti i viventi originano da un progenitore comune: la prima cellula vivente.
- Tre livelli di organizzazione cellulare.
- Tipi di organizzazione che si sono evoluti in relazione con tre modi principali di nutrizione: fotosintesi, assorbimento e ingestione.
